Wikipedia vs. China

Previous Entry Share Next Entry
Google caved. Yahoo caved. Microsoft caved. If you want to do business in China, you've got to play by China's rules, right? Well, Wikipedia might not be doing business per se, but after China blocked the Wiki, they refused to censor the site to appease China's government. China realized that Wikipedia was a valuable resource and unblocked it.

All those big companies had bats big enough to swing in order to get their way in China- China needs them more than they need China.
  • But they wanted the money more than they wanted a clean conscience.
    • In the end, it costs them money. Money spent censoring, money lost in regards to consumer trust- it's bad business. If they really wanted money, they wouldn't have done it.
      • Corps don't seem to think long-term anymore - just look at lay-offs to cut costs (and bankrupt possible customers).
