My d: drive is back up and running. Apparently, running chkdsk dozens and dozens and hundreds of times coupled with the maxtor scanning (but not repairing utility- it was just the last thing I did before chkdsk worked) coupled with Remy's patented t3knoreki (anyone who says you can't use reki on technological devices, or that reki is bad for them just doesn't know how to talk to them properly).

Everything works again, caloo callay. This was after the Maxtor scanning util gave me a message telling me "take down this number and use it to get a Return Merchandise Authorization".
