On the back of a Ben 'n Jerry's Carton:

We Oppose Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone
The family farmers who supply our milk and cream pledge not to treat their cows with rBGH

The FDA has said no signifigant difference has been shown & no test can now distinguish between milk from rBGH treated cows & untreated cows. Not all the suppliers of our other ingredients can promise that the milk they use comes from untreated cows.

I find that whole thing hilarious.
  • I do too. Ben & Jerry are "half-hippies," in that they single out rBGH as if it were the only thing wrong with industrial dairy. There are serious animal cruelty issues involved. And "family farmers?" That could mean the owner of the industrial dairy plant has a wife and kids who work there too. Big flippin' deal.

I'll stick to my soy-based ice cream.
    • I would soooo not want to live w/o soy ice cream.

Then again, I didn't think I'd learn to live w/o cheese, but they've not got a great substitute for it yet either, and I'm doing ok. :)
  • 'cept some of the cows get cowtit infections which means their milk isn't quite as nice as milk should be. Pus has been found...

Now I'm all about extra sources of protein but pus is icky.
  • Well, except that given a lack of other options, we're starting to think that the most likely cause of my seizures is rBGH.

They go away if I don't consume dairy products and eat very little meat, which I discovered by accident when my doctor told me to try to eat a completely non-fat diet. I've added meat back to my diet, and as long as I keep the dairy out, the seizures don't come back.

I'm not yet brave enough to attempt to drink organic (non rBGH) milk to see if the seizures come back. They hurt.
    • Lactose intolerance has been ruled out? Oh well ... just stick with the soymilk. Actually, ricemilk is even better, imho.
    • I do know someone who had to switch to dairy & meat that does not have added hormones because it was causing her terrible problems. It's not unheard of.

she's also allergic to soy. So the soy alternatives weren't an option for her either. Soy is one of the top 8 food allergies, and, it's added to all kinds of things you'd never expect.
    • I'm sorry to hear you have not-fun seizures. Mine are like forced naps: I get an aura so I know to at least sit myself down, then I'm out like a light, then awake again who-knows-when later without remembering a darn thing. But for me, they seem to be stress-triggered (and as long as I'm consistently taking my Keppra, I'm fine). I'm one of those admittedly very lucky people who don't suffer adverse affects from anything food-related. ^_^*
