Indymedia's servers were siezed this weekend by the FBI, working in conjunction with Swiss and Italian authorities. It took a few days, but finally a fairly major news outlet (the BBC) is running the story.

One has to wonder if this will hit a stateside news outlet, considering this is big news.
  • The subpeona was issued by Italy and Switzerland. The FBI provided assistance under terms of a law enforcement cooperation treaty because Indymedia is a US based organization, but saying they were seized by the FBI is misleading at best.

    • It might be a US-based company, but the servers that were seized were in the UK. Why didn't Scotland Yard carry out the order? In this case, the FBI being involved is very important, not misleading.

      My opinion, of course...
      • The FBI was involved because the company was based in the USA. Had it been a UK company with servers in the US, that Canada and Mexico were complaining about, the UK would probably send people to observe/assist.

Personally, if a US company's overseas offices are raided, I'd WANT an FBI agent there to watch over things to help ensure our people and interests are treated fairly. And no, I would not have a problem with other countries sending people over here in similar situations where their people or interests are involved.
